It is alive in the 21st century as it was in 16th or 17th or 18th centuries, and continues to destroy men elsewhere in the world. Vaulting ambition is not an exclusive predicament of Scottish chieftains of the mediaeval age. They leap out of the Elizabethan age and turn contemporary. However, what has fascinated readers through the centuries are the interior landscapes Shakes-peare created. ![]() That he wrote in English helped him to reach out to more people than Sophocles or Bhasa. But is it language that has endeared Shakespeare to the non-English speaking world? Hardly. The numerous adaptations on stage and screen and in languages other than English only confirm his greatness. Art is indeed culture specific but great art transcends the limits of culture, language and context. ![]()
